Angela Lee Duckworth: The key to success? Grit
Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth
took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She
quickly realized that IQ wasn’t the only thing separating the successful
students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of “grit” as a

KABC2 practice effect
While reading about the PASS theory I ran into
this information, in chapter one in:
Kaufman, A. S.,
Lichtenberger, E. O., Fletcher-Janzen, E., & Kaufman, N. L. (2005). Essentials of KABC-II assessment (Vol.
94). John Wiley & Sons.
The practice
effect is the amount a child's score increases from first testing to second. The data in the case of the KABC2, refers to re-testing
intervals ranging
from 12 to 56 days with a mean of 27 days.
The WISC3 data refers, as far as I can tell, to re-testing intervals of
up to a few months.
KABC2:
The largest practice effects were about 14–15 points for the Learning/Glr scale
at ages 7–18. The authors argue that large gains on this scale are not
surprising given that the nature of the tasks demands that children learn new
material, so if children are tested again once they have learned the material,
they have a distinct advantage over the first time they were tested. Indeed,
the practice effect of about 1 SD over a month’s time strongly suggests
that the children really learned the
material in the first place and are reflecting a certain amount of retention
over time. I'll add, that children not only learn new material,
but also find strategies for solving the test's problems. These strategies help them the second time
around.
At ages 7–18, Planning/Gf also
had a relatively large practice effect (10–11
points), whereas Simultaneous/Gv showed
a moderate effect (7–9 points), and both Sequential/Gsm (–1 to 1 point) and Knowledge/Gc (3
to 3.5 points) had small effects.
What can we very cautiously
learn from this information?
We learn about the "artificial" gap
formed between children coming from nurturing homes and children coming from
homes that are less nurturing. Children raised
in nurturing homes get more opportunities than children raised in homes that
are less nurturing to perform similar tasks to the ones tested in the KABC2
tests. Thus the scores that a child
from a nurturing home gets consists of his abilities and his nurturance. Scores that a child from a home that is less
nurturing gets reflect more of his "clean" cognitive abilities. That's why we can always be more optimistic
about children from homes that are less nurturing, because the nurturance we
can give to these children via the educational system can improve their
performance not only on IQ tests, but in many similar academic tasks.
It's interesting that the practice effect is
stronger in nonverbal tests. These tests
may have more new elements. It's
possible, that practicing with similar tasks can introduce the child to a
variety of tasks, decrease the sense of novelty, and help him find strategies
that will help with IQ tasks.
On the WISC-III, Performance IQ gains averaged 12.5 points
as a result of retesting, as opposed to 2.5 points for Verbal IQ.
At ages 3–5, practice effects for
all scales of the KABC2 tended to be small to moderate (2–6 points). Largest
practice effects were on Learning/Glr and Simultaneous/Gv (5–6
points), and smallest effects were on Sequential/Gsm and Knowledge/Gc
(2–4 points).
Overall practice effects on the FCI
and MPI scores of KABC2 were 10–11 points for ages 7–18 and 5–6 points for ages
3–5.

Kaufman,
A. S., Lichtenberger, E. O., Fletcher-Janzen, E., & Kaufman, N. L.
(2005). Essentials
of KABC-II assessment (Vol. 94). John Wiley & Sons.

ATTENTION, SIMULTANEOUS, SUCCESSIVE.

Nonverbal learning disability – is it possible to define it in terms of CHC theory? Part two.
Is it possible to define NVLD in terms of
CHC?
(I recommend reading part one, the previous
post, before reading this one).
In order to define NVLD in terms of CHC, we'll look at
the steps of learning disability definition according to Flanagan's model,
using CHC theory. Since I haven't found
literature dealing directly with this subject, I'll try to use the information
presented in the previous post.
Step 1: Significantly low achievement
in reading/ reading comprehension/writing/written expression/mathematics. It's probable that NVLD
children will have significantly poor achievement in math and maybe also in
reading comprehension and written expression.
But as stated in the previous post, this criterion is not always met in
NVLD children. When it's not met, the
child is not learning disabled. Mammarella &
Cornoldi write, that contrary to other learning
disabled children, the academic weaknesses of children with NVLD may be
moderate and not dramatic. So it's possible,
according to these authors, that the label NVLD is not correct (at least in
these cases). The authors suggest the
name "specific nonverbal disorder" or "specific visuospatial
disorder". In case the child meets
the first step, it's possible to move on to the next step:
Step 2: One (or more) cognitive ability is
significantly below average. NVLD children may have poor Visuospatial Processing
, Processing Speed, and maybe lowered Fluid ability. They also may have poor Working Memory. As for Long Term Storage and Retrieval, NVLD
children may poor Free Recall (of visual stimuli, for instance in the
RCFT). Probably not all these abilities
will be lowered simultaneously in each NVLD child. In the 2012 CHC model (see the first
presentation in the series "Intelligence and Cognitive Abilities" in
the right hand column of this blog), there are more cognitive abilities that
are likely to be lowered in NVLD children: Psychomotor Speed, Psychomotor Ability,
Tactile Ability and Kinesthetic Ability.
Step 3:
There is a logical or an empirical connection between the poor academic
achievement and the low cognitive abilities. This criterion may be met in an NVLD child
having mathematics difficulties that can be explained by poor Visuospatial Ability. Reading comprehension difficulties can be
related to poor Fluid Ability (in the aspect of integration of parts into a
whole and understanding implicit meaning in texts).
Step 4: Most cognitive abilities are
intact. NVLD children are
likely to have intact Comprehension Knowledge and Auditory Processing, as well
as intact Memory Span. As for Long Term Storage and Retrieval, most narrow abilities are likely to be intact
(Free Recall of auditory stimuli, Naming Facility, Ideational and Word fluency,
Meaningful Memory). It's possible that Fluid
Ability will also be intact, especially if assessed with nonvisual tests. When the lowered abilities are Visuospatial Processing
and Processing Speed and the other
cognitive abilities are intact, this criterion is met.
Step 5: Exclusionary factors
(insufficient instruction, immigration, emotional difficulties etc.) are not
the main reasons for the poor academic achievement. It's possible that NVLD
children will have emotional and social difficulties that are secondary to the
cognitive disabilities and are not a main reason for the poor academic
performance.
To summarize, there certainly will be children with
symptoms of NVLD that we can diagnose as learning disabled using this
definition, within CHC theory. Other
children, presenting most symptoms but without significantly poor achievement
in reading, writing and/or math, will not be diagnosed as learning disabled,
not according to the CHC definition, nor according to any other learning
disability definition.

Nonverbal learning disability – is it possible to define it in terms of CHC theory? Part one.
The interesting idea to write about this subject is Meir Buchner's.
A search for papers referring directly to this subject
did not yield results, so I'll try to make my own conjectures. Due to this post's length I divided it into
two parts.
In this part we'll look at the symptoms of nonverbal
learning disability (NVLD).
The definition of NVLD is in dispute.
Mammarella & Cornoldi reviewd 35 NVLD studies and derived five
diagnostic criteria. They stress that
the criteria are preliminary, since NVLD was defined differently in each
study. There is a need for more research
done with a consensual definition.
Here is Mammarella & Cornoldi's paper:
Irene C. Mammarella & Cesare Cornoldi (2014) An analysis of the criteria
used to diagnose children with Nonverbal
Learning Disability (NLD), Child Neuropsychology: A
Journal on Normal and Abnormal Development in Childhood and Adolescence, 20:3,
255-280, http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09297049.2013.796920
Of these five criteria, the authors find the first
criterion necessary. At least two of the criteria 2-4 are required, and the fifth criterion is possible.
- Low visuospatial
ability with relatively good verbal ability. A significant
discrepancy between measures of verbal ability (in CHC terms,
comprehension knowledge) and measures of perceptual or visuospatial
ability (in CHC terms, visuospatial processing). The authors suggest that the discrepancy
should be at least one standard deviation. A child
does not meet
this criterion if his verbal ability is significantly higher than average
(say, above 115) and his visuospatial ability is average. A child
does not meet
this criterion if his verbal ability is significantly lower than average (say, below 85) and his visuospatial
ability is two or more standard deviations below average.
- Visuoconstructive and fine motor impairments. This ability is usually
measured by reproduction of geometric figures. We don't only look at the individual's
aptitude for copying a figure, but how well planned and organized that
figure is. This ability is usually measured
by tests like the BEERY and RCFT. Performance
is poor if it's one or more standard deviation below average. The authors recommend using more than
one test. With two tests
performance is poor if one of the test's scores is one and a half standard
deviation or more below average.
- Poor math achievement at school along with relatively good reading decoding ability. NLD children do not usually have trouble recalling arithmetical facts, but they make visuospatial errors in written calculations (i.e., confusing columns, carrying/borrowing errors) and write mirrored numbers. Not all studies find poor performance in standardized mathematics tests. The authors recommend basing the diagnosis on a discrepancy of at least one standard deviation between intact reading decoding and poor mathematics achievement. They recommend looking for qualitative signs of math difficulties resulting from visuospatial difficulties.
- Poor spatial working memory. The problem is, that I'm
not sure the authors are distinguishing
between spatial working memory and spatial memory. When writing about this criterion they
sometimes write " spatial working memory" and sometimes "spatial
memory". Tests measuring spatial working memory present the child with a
series of spatial stimuli, on which he has to perform mental manipulations
and respond immediately. Tests measuring
spatial memory present the child with spatial stimuli and measure his
ability to retrieve them after a period of time (after four minutes or
more), with no manipulation. When I
looked at the tests that were used in the studies measuring spatial working memory, usually I couldn't
tell what they were, because they are described vaguely as "spatial
working memory tests" or "visuospatial organization
problems". Anyway, the authors
recommend that the score on a test measuring spatial working memory should
be lower than average by one standard deviation or more (when using one
test) and one and a half standard deviation or more in one of two tests
used
- Social and emotional difficulties.
The authors list this as another
criterion for identifying a subgroup of children with NVLD. Difficulties understanding emotions and
difficulties with social skills should
be present at school and at home
and should be assessed by a clinical interview and observation. The authors suggest using questionnaires
and clinical interviews with parents and teachers.
All of the above is from Mammarella & Cornoldi's
study.
Flanagan and her colleagues, in a paper about
the WISC4 test,
Flanagan, D. P., Alfonso, V. C., Mascolo, J.
T., & Hale, J. B. (2011). The
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children–Fourth Edition in Neuropsychological
Practice.
write that children with NVLD have poor math performance and poor
performance in the PRI (perceptual reasoning index) and the PSI (processing
speed index). The PRI consists of the
tests matrix reasoning, Block Design and Picture Concepts. The matrix reasoning test measures fluid
ability (using visual stimuli). It's
possible that processing speed is poor because the tests measuring processing
speed also use visual stimuli.
Flanagan adds, that
children with NVLD performed well on forward digit span and had poor
performance on backward digit span.
Rourke suggested a
definition for NVLD in 1995, that was
accepted by many researchers. According to
this definition, children with NVLD have high verbal ability, good verbal rote
memory, phonological awareness, verbal fluency and good verbal classification
ability. These children have weak
visuospatial skills, perceptual and motor skills and nonverbal problem solving
skills. They have difficulties with math
but intact word reading skills. Often
they have social difficulties resulting from visuospatial difficulties, that
affect their ability to read social and visual cues like gestures and facial
expressions. This definition is from
this study:
Larsen, J. M. (2011). The impact of visual memory deficits on academic
achievement in children and adolescents (Doctoral dissertation, The University of
Utah). http://content.lib.utah.edu/utils/getfile/collection/etd3/id/461/filename/589.pdf
To all this I'll add from personal experience, that
children with NVLD sometimes have reading comprehension difficulties
(understanding latent and implicit meanings in texts and content related to
social and cultural norms), analyzing and synthesizing a whole into parts and
parts into a whole (not only with visual
stimuli, but generally paying a lot of attention to details and having difficulty
seeing the gestalt), handwriting difficulties, poor drawing and written
expression, and trouble understanding intonation.
Is it possible to define NVLD in terms of CHC
theory? In the next post.
