Understanding storytelling tests through self theory – part 3 – Idealization

This is a third post in this subject.  The posts are inspired by Prof.  Marshall Silverstein's excellent book:

Self psychology and diagnostic assessment: identifying selfobject functions through psychological
testing.

In part three (here), we'll see how to find indications of idealizing self object needs is projective tests.

In part one (here, and also in the right hand column of this blog, under the heading "personality
theories/psychotherapy")  we've seen how to identify signs of a non cohesive self in projective stories.

In part two  (here, and also in the right hand column of this blog, under the heading "personality theories/psychotherapy")  we've seen how to identify indications of mirroring needs in projective stories.

Tips for good assessment and report writing – 8 and 9

These are the eighth and the ninth tip written by the assessment  team at the Jerusalem municipality educational psychology services.   The members of the team are:  Rita   Baumgarten, Hanna Brimer, Nadine Caplan , Eynat  Cohen Rahman , Etti Daniel Simon , Uri Dar ,  Michelle Lisses Topaz, Betty Netzer, Ruth Oman Shaked , Adina Sacknovitz , Smadar Sapir Yogev, Anan Srour   and  Dahlia Zayit.

For the purpose of learning disability diagnosis – go through the definition steps.

Ask yourselves:

Does the child have significantly poor achievement in reading decoding/reading comprehension/writing/written expression/math computations/math reasoning?

Is one of the child's cognitive abilities significantly below average?

Can this poor cognitive ability explain the difficulties the child has with reading/writing/math?

Are most of the child's cognitive abilities within average limits?

Are  exclusionary factors (for instance, emotional difficulties/lack of learning/inappropriate instruction) better explanations for the child's difficulties?

Only if you answer "yes" to all those questions, you can diagnose the child as learning disabled.

Remember:

1. Not every difficulty in reading/writing/math is caused by learning disability.

2. Even a very significant difficulty in a cognitive ability is not necessarily an indication of learning disability.

Pay attention to the child's emotional-personality characteristics and to the interaction between them and the child's cognitive characteristics.

Cognitive difficulties have emotional – personality ramifications, and sometimes also emotional – personality origins.  Emotional – personality difficulties have cognitive ramifications and sometimes also cognitive origins.  Try to delve into these reciprocal influences, since sometimes they are the key to understanding   the child's world and to constructing a meaningful intervention for the child.

Three theoretical interpretations of the WISC4, and more.

Flanagan, D. P., Ortiz, S. O., Alfonso, V. C. & Dynda, A. (2014). Cognitive Assessment: Progress in Psychometric Theories, the Structure of Cognitive Tests, and Approaches to Test Interpretation. In D. Saklofske, V. Schwean, & C. Reynolds (Eds.), Oxford handbook of psychological assessment of children and adolescents. New York: Oxford University Press. http://static.squarespace.com/static/53f6762ae4b02e1724aa7c77/t/542e1e62e4b0bfd43274ee36/1412308578489/Flanagan_et_al_in_Saklofske.pdf

This chapter reviews the development of intelligence theories and especially psychometric approaches.  It also reviews the changes made to intelligence tests according to the theoretical developments, and mentions the current efforts to link psychometric approaches and cognitive theories.

Flanagan and her colleagues also write about the relations between cognitive abilities and reading, writing and math.

One thing I've learned from reading about cognitive-achievement relations is that  findings about the relations between cognitive abilities and reading, writing and math are dependent upon the specific tests used to measure reading, writing, math and the cognitive abilities.  That's why the conclusions that can be drawn from studies are often limited to the specific tests used in them.  If, for instance, reading comprehension is measured by tests that don't require making inferences from the text, there's no wonder that no relation is found between reading comprehension and fluid ability.

The XBA – CROSS BATTERY ANALYSIS approach developed by Flanagan and her colleagues is reviewed towards the end of the chapter.   These researchers classified more than 700 tests and subtests according to the CHC broad and narrow abilities they measure.  The classification was done according to research results and  expert consensus.  When the intelligence test being used in an assessment  does not measure certain CHC abilities, the XBA approach delineates a way to assess these abilities (by using tests classified as measuring these abilities from other intelligence tests), according to specific rules.

One interesting thing I found in this chapter is a suggested classification of WISC4 subtests in three ways:  according to the Luria theory (PASS – PLANNING, ATTENTION, SIMULTANEOUS, SUCCESSIVE), according to neuropsychological domains (sensory – motor, speed and efficiency, attention, visual-spatial and detail, auditory verbal, memory and learning, executive functions and language), and according to broad and narrow CHC abilities.  The classification according to neuropsychological domains is based on neuropsychological texts the authors read.

More on PASS theory and it's manifestations in KABC test can be found in the presentation "a very brief introduction to intelligence theories" – the first of the presentation series "intelligence and cognitive abilities" found in the right hand column of this blog.  In this presentation you'll also find an analysis of the KABC test from cognitive and psychometric points of view, and Woodcock, Schneider and McGrew's suggestions for combining psychometric and cognitive theories.

Five points of agreement among experts on SLD identification

CRITICAL ISSUES IN RESPONSE-TO INTERVENTION,
COMPREHENSIVE  EVALUATION, AND SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITIES IDENTIFICATION AND INTERVENTION: AN EXPERT WHITE PAPER CONSENSUS

This paper (written in 2010) is a concise summary of a survey conducted among 58 American experts in SLD, cognitive/neuropsychological assessment
of high incidence disorders including SLD, SLD educational intervention,  and/or  legal issues in SLD.  Experts who have primarily advocated ability-achievement discrepancy or failure to respond-to-intervention for SLD identification purposes  were not included in the survey.  The survey's goal was to affect SLD public policy and practices in the United States.

Here are the survey's results, with my additions in orange.

In order to better understand the expert agreements, you need to know about IDEA 2004, the discrepancy model, the RTI model, and Flanagan's SLD definition.  These concepts are explained in the presentation "Learning Disability – the story of a definition" which is available   here.

The experts agreed on five points:

 1. Maintain the SLD definition (IDEA 2004) and strengthen statutory requirements in SLD identification procedures.  Meaning, that the IDEA 2004 definition criteria should be more rigorously followed.  Many participants (82%) felt strongly  that the definition should not be amended to include any child exhibiting low achievement.  The experts believe that low achievement alone is not a suitable diagnostic indicator for SLD.

2. Neither ability-achievement discrepancy analyses nor failure to respond-to-intervention (RTI) alone is sufficient for SLD identification.

3. The most empirically and clinically sensible way identify SLD is to identify a pattern of psychological processing strengths and weaknesses, and achievement deficits consistent with this pattern of processing weaknesses.

This agreement reflects Flanagan's approach to SLD identification, in accordance with CHC theory.  In CHC terminology, that means identifying the child's strong/average  and weak cognitive abilities (of the following abilities: fluid ability, comprehension-knowledge, short term memory, processing speed, long term storage and retrieval, visual processing, auditory processing), identifying low achievement in reading, writing and math, and linking the weak cognitive abilities to the low achievement domains.

4. An RTI model could be used to prevent learning problems in children, but comprehensive evaluations should occur for SLD identification purposes, and children with SLD need individualized interventions based on specific learning needs (based on their cognitive processes strengths and weaknesses), not merely more intense interventions designed for children in general education (as proposed by the RTI model).

Most experts thought that both RTI model and a comprehensive assessment of cognitive processes are important in SLD identification and intervention.

The experts were concerned that the RTI model could turn into a "wait to fail" model, like the discrepancy model.  Instead of designing an intervention that fits the child's specific difficulties, the RTI approach advocates administering a more intensive intervention when the child does not respond to the first intervention.  The experts argue for more flexibility in RTI implementation.  When the child does not respond to the first intervention, it might be advisable to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of psychological processes to see whether the reason for the lack of response is SLD and if so – to plan a specific intervention that will suit the child's needs – rather than to intensify the existing intervention.

5. Assessment of cognitive and neuropsychological processes should be used not only for identification, but for intervention purposes as well, and these assessment-intervention relationships need further empirical investigation.  Meaning, that more research is needed to determine which reading, writing and math deficiencies are caused by which low cognitive abilities, whether cognitive ability training can improve achievement in reading, writing and math, and which kinds of training is effective.
